Sayan Mountains Oka River Gold Mining Road

This forgotten mining road follows the Oka River deep into the Eastern Sayan Mountains, passing abandoned Soviet gold extraction sites that operated from the 1940s through the 1980s. The 180-kilometer route begins near Orlik and winds through dense taiga forest, crossing multiple tributaries on deteriorating Soviet-era bridges. Key waypoints include the ruins at Sorok settlement and the massive tailings piles near Zolotoy Creek, where rusted dredges still sit in the riverbed like mechanical dinosaurs.

Moderate technical difficulty with several challenging river crossings and steep climbs over mountain passes reaching 1,800 meters. High-clearance 4WD essential, recovery gear recommended for the sketchy bridge crossings. Best attempted June through September when snow clears but before autumn rains turn the track to soup. No permits required but fuel up in Nizhneudinsk — there’s nothing for 300 kilometers once you’re committed. The reward is absolute solitude in some of Siberia’s most pristine wilderness, plus fascinating Soviet industrial archaeology.
