Disko Island Qeqertarsuaq Coastal Circuit
Basalt columns meet Arctic whaling history
The rough track winds along Disko Island’s dramatic coastline where 60-million-year-old basalt columns rise straight from the Davis Strait. You’ll navigate past the abandoned Godhavn whaling station, its rusted machinery still scattered across the tundra, before climbing inland through valleys carved by retreating glaciers. The route connects several small settlements including Kangerluk and Kuannit, with river crossings that can flood during summer melt.
This moderate route demands high-clearance 4WD for rocky coastal sections and boggy inland stretches. Summer’s the only feasible season, roughly June through September, when ferry service runs from Ilulissat. Pack fuel for the entire loop – no services between settlements. The reward is raw Arctic scenery, midnight sun, and some of the most accessible geological wonders in West Greenland.
