Disco Island Ukkusissat Coal Mine Access Road

Arctic coal mining ghost road with industrial ruins

Moderate

The Ukkusissat Coal Mine Access Road cuts across Disco Island’s stark interior, following the original supply route built in the 1920s to service Greenland’s northernmost coal extraction operation. This 28-kilometer route starts from the coastal settlement of Ukkusissat and climbs through tundra valleys to reach the abandoned mine infrastructure at 600 meters elevation. The road passes the haunting remains of mining equipment, concrete foundations, and a collapsed wooden bridge over Kuussuup Kuua creek that requires careful navigation around a steep ravine.

Moderate difficulty with several technical creek crossings and loose scree sections that demand high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear. The route is only accessible from late June through early September when snow melts enough for vehicle passage. No permits required but fuel must be carried from Ilulissat, and potable water is scarce beyond the settlement. Dispersed camping is excellent along the mine road with sweeping views of Disco Bay icebergs. This route offers genuine Arctic industrial archaeology combined with pristine tundra landscapes that few overlanders ever experience.
