Qaarsut to Uummannaq Dog Sled Trail
Ancient dog sled route across frozen fjords.
When winter locks up Uummannaq Fjord, this traditional dog sled route becomes passable for 4x4s, connecting the airport at Qaarsut with Uummannaq town beneath the distinctive heart-shaped mountain. Inuit hunters have used this route for centuries, and the trail markers are still caribou antlers stuck in stone cairns. The route crosses 12 kilometers of sea ice thick enough for trucks, then climbs rocky terrain to reach the colorful houses of Uummannaq perched on granite cliffs.
Difficult conditions require experience with ice driving and Arctic survival skills. The sea ice section demands constant vigilance for pressure ridges and tide cracks that can swallow a vehicle. Only attempt in March-April when ice is thickest, and carry ice picks, rope, and hypothermia gear. No fuel available at either end – bring everything. Cell service exists only in Uummannaq. The reward is reaching one of Greenland’s most photogenic settlements by an ancient route that connects you to centuries of Arctic travel tradition.
