Disko Island Godhavn to Blæsedalen Mining Road

Arctic mining heritage through volcanic badlands

Moderate

This remote mining access road cuts across Disko Island’s stark volcanic landscape from the settlement of Godhavn (Qeqertarsuaq) to the abandoned Blæsedalen coal mining operations. The route follows old dogsled trails and mining supply roads through Arctic tundra, crossing several seasonal creeks and navigating around massive basalt formations. The abandoned Blæsedalen mine site, operational until the 1970s, sits in a dramatic valley surrounded by towering basalt cliffs.

This is a moderate difficulty route requiring high-clearance 4WD and Arctic driving experience. The road becomes impassable during winter months and spring thaw. Best attempted June through September when creek crossings are manageable and weather permits safe travel. No fuel available once you leave Godhavn, and emergency extraction is extremely limited. The reward is pristine Arctic wilderness, geological wonders, and a haunting glimpse into Greenland’s industrial heritage in one of the world’s most remote locations.
