Big Creek State Park Pioneer Ridge Trail

Big Creek State Park’s Pioneer Ridge Trail cuts through some of Iowa’s most challenging terrain, following old logging roads along limestone bluffs above the Des Moines River. The route winds past the abandoned Coalville Cemetery, where weathered headstones mark settlers from the 1860s, before dropping into technical creek crossings that can turn treacherous after spring rains. The trail connects to historic coal mining roads that once hauled black diamonds from underground shafts scattered throughout the timber.

This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for the creek fords and muddy climbs out of the hollow bottoms. Best tackled April through October when water levels stay manageable, though wet seasons can make the clay sections impassable for days. No permits required, but bring recovery gear and check water conditions at the park office. The payoff is solitude in Iowa’s wildest terrain and glimpses into the state’s mining past that most never see.
