Hatfield-McCoy Warrior Trail
Coal country technical challenge
The Warrior Trail cuts deep through West Virginia’s coal-scarred mountains, past abandoned tipples and through rocky creek beds where bootleggers once ran shine. This 60-mile network connects Logan and Mingo counties via gnarly single-track and technical jeep roads, with the infamous Devil’s Staircase climb testing every rig that attempts it. You’ll ford Mud River multiple times and navigate around massive strip mine benches that drop off into nowhere.
Moderate to difficult terrain demands high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery gear — creek crossings can turn deadly fast after rain. Trail permits required through the Hatfield-McCoy system, best run April through October when water levels stay manageable. Limited dispersed camping available at designated sites. This isn’t a scenic cruise — it’s raw Appalachian mining country where mechanical failures happen fast and cell service disappears for miles.
