Gibb River Road — Kununurra to Wyndham via Cambridge Gulf and Keep River Approach
The Kimberley's forgotten eastern door.
Most people drive the Gibb River Road and call it done at Kununurra or Derby. Fewer bother with the eastern spur that swings north toward Wyndham — and that’s exactly why you should. This stretch runs roughly 100 kilometres from Kununurra through the Keep River corridor and up toward the Cambridge Gulf escarpment, dropping you into Wyndham with its five-river lookout and its ghost-town meatworks. The road itself is corrugated gravel and bulldust with creek crossings that can rise fast after afternoon storms — Pentecost River’s reputation is well-earned for a reason, and the approaches to the gulf are no different in a wet year.
This is dry-season-only country. May through September is your window; October onward and the crossings turn lethal. You need a genuine high-clearance 4WD with a snorkel if you’re traveling close to the shoulder of the season. Carry at minimum 30 litres of spare water — Wyndham’s fuel and services are limited, so top up in Kununurra before departure. No permits required for the road itself, but some station tracks crossing private land require courtesy stops. The payoff is Cambridge Gulf at sunset, a handful of tourists, and the kind of raw Kimberley silence that the more popular gorges can’t offer anymore.

Can a stock Hilux or Prado handle this stretch without a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD will manage most of it, but a snorkel is strongly recommended due to water crossings that can run thigh-deep in the wet season tail-off. Minimum 200mm clearance — lifted rigs will have more margin on the rocky creek beds.
When does this route close, and is it passable early dry season?
The route is typically open May through September. After the wet season, crossings on the Cambridge Gulf approach can stay flooded well into April — check DBCA road conditions before you leave Kununurra, conditions change fast.
Do I need a permit to drive this route or camp along it?
No permit is required for the road itself. If you're crossing onto Keep River National Park land near the NT border, standard national park entry fees apply. Dispersed camping outside park boundaries is free.
What's the hardest section, and what should I actually expect?
The creek crossings between the Cambridge Gulf turnoff and the Wyndham approach are the crux — slippery black-soil banks, corrugated approaches, and unpredictable water depth. The corrugations on the main dirt sections are relentless; they'll shake your gear loose if it's not strapped tight.
How much fuel do I need, and is there any resupply between Kununurra and Wyndham?
Carry enough for the full 100km plus a buffer — there is zero fuel on this route. Kununurra and Wyndham are your only fill points, and Wyndham's fuel availability can be limited on weekends, so top up in Kununurra before you leave.
