Cohutta Wilderness Jacks River Trail Road

The ghost of the old Conasauga River logging railroad haunts this rutted track that dead-ends at the Jacks River trailhead, where Jacks River Falls crashes 80 feet through a granite slot canyon. The road follows the abandoned railroad grade for eight miles through dense Appalachian forest, crossing Rough Creek twice on questionable concrete slabs before reaching the wilderness boundary. Expect washouts, loose rock, and enough mud holes to test your diff locks during wet seasons.

This is a solid moderate trail requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates — those concrete creek crossings will punish low-hanging components. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, though summer brings dense foliage and occasional afternoon thunderstorms. No permits needed for day use, but dispersed camping along the route is prohibited since you’re approaching wilderness. Pack extra water and recovery gear. The payoff is accessing one of Georgia’s most remote corners where the only sounds are rushing water and your engine working.
