Uummannaq Fjord Ice Road Circuit
Winter sea ice highway through Arctic fjords
When temperatures drop below -20°C, locals mark out the traditional ice roads across Uummannaq Fjord’s frozen channels, creating temporary highways between isolated settlements. The route connects Uummannaq town with Qaarsut, Niaqornat, and Saattut, following GPS waypoints and traditional markers across sea ice up to three meters thick. Halfway through, you’ll pass the distinctive heart-shaped mountain that gives Uummannaq its name, towering 1,175 meters above the white expanse.
This unique seasonal route requires winter driving experience and ice-rated vehicles with studded tires. February through April offers the safest ice conditions, but always travel with local guides who monitor ice thickness daily. Vehicle weight limits strictly enforced – no heavy rigs. The payoff is experiencing Greenland’s traditional winter highway system and accessing some of the most isolated Arctic communities on Earth, where dogsleds still outnumber snowmobiles.
