Centennial Mountains Red Rock Pass Route
Continental Divide crossing through big sky country
Red Rock Pass sits at 7,056 feet on the Continental Divide, marking the historic divide between Pacific and Atlantic watersheds while connecting Montana’s remote Centennial Valley to Idaho’s Island Park. This route follows old wagon roads and cattle drives through the Centennial Mountains, passing weathered homestead ruins and offering panoramic views of the Yellowstone ecosystem. The technical challenge comes at Red Rock Creek crossing and the rocky descent into Lima Reservoir, where loose shale and narrow shelf roads demand attention.
Moderate difficulty requires stock 4WD with good ground clearance for rocky sections and creek crossings. Summer through early fall provides the best access, though snow can linger at elevation into June. No permits needed, but bring extra fuel and water as services are 40+ miles away in either direction. The payoff is solitude in genuine big sky country, dispersed camping among aspen groves, and wildlife including moose, elk, and occasional wolves in one of the West’s most remote valleys.
