Centennial Mountains Continental Divide Traverse
Continental Divide grizzly country ridge running
The Continental Divide splits Montana and Idaho through some of the wildest country left in the Lower 48, and this route follows that razor’s edge for 35 miles of technical high-altitude driving. You’ll cross into grizzly bear habitat where wolves still hunt elk, navigating narrow ridge roads that drop off into thousand-foot canyons on both sides. The route connects Monida Pass to West Yellowstone, passing through Sawtell Peak area where mining claims from the 1890s still dot the landscape.
This is Expert-level terrain requiring full-size 4WD with low range, recovery gear, and bear spray. Summer-only access from July through September due to snow, with no services for 40+ miles once you commit. Cell service is nonexistent, and weather changes fast at elevation. What you get is absolute solitude in some of the most pristine wilderness left in America, plus bragging rights for completing one of the region’s most challenging Continental Divide crossings.
