Manistee National Forest Loda Lake Loop

Sand country technical through forgotten logging district

Moderate

This forgotten logging district northeast of Baldwin throws mud, sand, and stream crossings at you across 40 miles of Michigan’s wildest national forest. You’ll tackle the notorious Pine Creek ford (knee-deep in spring), navigate unmarked two-tracks through dense jack pine, and climb the old railroad grade to Loda Lake’s remote backcountry campsite. The route connects historic CCC camps, abandoned fire towers, and ghost towns from the white pine era.

Moderate to difficult depending on season — spring runoff makes Pine Creek impassable for anything without serious ground clearance. Stock 4WD with recovery gear mandatory, winch recommended for the sand pits past marker 23. Best May through October when water levels drop. No permits needed, but fuel up in Baldwin — you’re looking at 120+ miles round-trip with side spurs. Dispersed camping allowed throughout. You get pristine Michigan backcountry without the Drummond Island ferry hassle.
