Manistee National Forest Forest Road 7019 Pine River Technical Loop
Deep sand ruts through logging country wilderness
Forest Road 7019 threads through 18 miles of Manistee’s most remote jack pine wilderness, following the meandering Pine River through country that looks exactly like it did when loggers cleared out 100 years ago. The sandy two-track develops axle-deep ruts during wet weather, and seasonal timber cuts create maze-like detours around fresh slash piles. Three river crossings range from ankle-deep riffles to mid-bumper fords depending on recent rainfall, with the crossing at RM 11.2 notorious for soft approaches that trap unwary drivers.
High-clearance recommended minimum, but 4WD becomes essential after spring thaw or heavy rain when the sand turns to soup. Sand ladders or traction boards can save your day in the deeper sections. Late summer offers the most predictable conditions. Zero cell coverage and no services within 25 miles — carry extra fuel and water. Excellent dispersed camping along the river, with good trout fishing and complete solitude. This is old-school Michigan backcountry at its finest.
