Sierra de Juárez Crest Road
Pine forests and ridge running in northern Baja
This ridge road climbs into the Sierra de Juárez’s pine-covered peaks, running the spine between Tecate and Mexicali through country that feels more like Colorado than Baja. The route threads between Picacho del Diablo viewpoints and drops through technical rocky descents near Laguna Hanson, where seasonal lakes reflect stands of Jeffrey pine. You’ll navigate boulder-choked arroyos and cross seasonal streams that can turn impassable during winter storms.
Moderate to difficult terrain demands high-clearance 4WD with low-range capability and rock sliders recommended. Winter brings snow above 5,000 feet, making late spring through fall the prime season. Carry recovery gear, extra water, and be prepared for sudden weather changes at altitude. The reward is solitude in Mexico’s most temperate ecosystem, with camping among pines and views stretching from the Pacific to the Sea of Cortez.
