French Pete Creek Mining Road

Cascades mining road to wilderness

Moderate

French Pete Creek Road penetrates deep into Oregon’s Cascade wilderness, following an old mining access route that dates back to the 1920s gold rush in the McKenzie River drainage. The road starts innocently enough near Cougar Reservoir but quickly deteriorates into a rutted, rocky track as it climbs through towering Douglas fir toward the headwaters of French Pete Creek. Mile marker 8 brings you to the ruins of the old Belknap Mine, where rusted equipment still sits among the moss-covered stumps of what was once a bustling operation.

This is a solid Moderate trail requiring 4WD and good ground clearance for the creek crossings and loose rock sections in the upper reaches. Open late May through early October, though the road can be muddy well into July. No permits needed but carry recovery gear—cell service disappears after mile 3 and you’re 25 miles from the nearest help. What you get is access to some of Oregon’s most pristine old-growth forest, legitimate wilderness solitude, and camping spots where the only light pollution comes from your campfire reflecting off centuries-old trees.
