Three Sisters Backcountry Loop
Circle Oregon's volcanic trinity on backcountry roads
The Three Sisters Backcountry Loop stitches together a network of forest service roads that ring the volcanic trio dominating central Oregon’s Cascade spine, weaving through ancient lava flows, clear-cuts, and cathedral forests where Douglas firs tower 200 feet overhead. The route tackles multiple river crossings including a potentially tricky ford at Obsidian Creek, threads past the massive McKenzie Lava Field where NASA once trained Apollo astronauts, and offers jaw-dropping views of the glaciated peaks from Dee Wright Observatory before dropping into the dense canopy of the Willamette National Forest’s backcountry.
Moderate difficulty with rocky sections and seasonal creek crossings that can challenge even experienced drivers during spring snowmelt. High-clearance 4WD essential, with skid plates recommended for the sharper lava rock sections around McKenzie Pass. Best driven July through October when snow clears from the higher elevations; permits required for overnight camping in wilderness-adjacent areas. You’ll earn access to some of Oregon’s most pristine alpine country and camping spots that most tourists never see, plus the satisfaction of completing one of the Cascades’ most scenic backcountry circuits.
