Deschutes National Forest — Cascade Lakes Highway Corridor Dispersed Camp

Cascade Lakes Highway (OR-46) punches through some of the most dramatic volcanic scenery in the Pacific Northwest, and the dispersed pullouts strung along it between Lava Lake and Devils Lake are a genuine overlander’s playground. Elevations run 5,400–5,600 feet. You get sky-high views of South Sister, easy access to multiple trailheads, and enough separation from the crowds that it doesn’t feel like a campground — because it isn’t one. Vault toilets exist at the trailhead day-use areas nearby but not at dispersed sites. Fire restrictions are strict and enforced; stove-only is standard operating procedure by midsummer.

OR-46 is paved but the dispersed turnouts are dirt — wet seasons turn them soft. The highway itself closes at the Dutchman Flat Sno-Park end seasonally, typically November through late May or early June. No fee for dispersed camping, but a Northwest Forest Pass covers day-use parking zones at trailheads nearby.
