Willamette National Forest McKenzie River Old Growth Loop
Ancient forests and crystal springs made simple
This mellow loop winds through some of Oregon’s last intact old-growth forests where Douglas firs tower 250 feet overhead and Clear Lake’s spring-fed waters maintain a constant 34 degrees year-round. The route follows gentle Forest Service roads past Sahalie Falls’ 100-foot plunge and connects to the historic McKenzie Highway corridor. Submerged logs from a 3,000-year-old forest fire remain perfectly preserved in Clear Lake’s icy depths.
Easy difficulty welcomes any vehicle with decent ground clearance—even minivans tackle this route during dry conditions. Open May through November with occasional winter access depending on snow levels. Excellent cell coverage near Highway 126 makes this perfect for families or folks new to forest roads. Koosah Falls and the McKenzie River Trail provide hiking options, while Clear Lake Campground offers developed facilities if dispersed camping isn’t your style. Pure Pacific Northwest magic without the technical drama.
