Vermilion River Timber Access Historic Circuit

Historic logging roads with prairie river crossings

Easy

This historic timber access loop follows old logging roads through the Vermilion River corridor, where hardwood timber crews worked the bottomland forests in the early 1900s. The route winds through recovering oak savanna and crosses several seasonal tributaries, passing remnants of old saw mill foundations and skidder trails. You’ll ford the Middle Fork Vermilion River at two points where the limestone bedrock creates natural crossings used by loggers hauling out white oak and walnut.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on water levels – the river crossings can be knee-deep during spring runoff but usually run axle-deep or less. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine in normal conditions, but 4WD helps in wet clay sections. Spring through fall offers the best access, though hunting seasons bring heavy traffic. Multiple spots for primitive camping along the river, and the fishing for smallmouth bass is surprisingly good for central Illinois.
