Shakamak State Park Campground
This 1,766-acre park wraps around three connected lakes — Shakamak, Kickapoo, and Lenape — carved from old strip mine country in the 1930s. The campground sits in mature oak and hickory forest with 94 sites spread across two loops, most with electric hookups. Sites 60-94 on the upper loop offer more privacy and shade, while the lower loop puts you closer to Lake Shakamak’s swimming beach and boat ramp.
Access is straightforward off State Road 48, but the park sees heavy weekend traffic during summer. Spring and fall offer the best balance of weather and solitude. The trail system connects all three lakes — a solid 4-mile loop if you want to stretch your legs between trail runs.
