Knox County Wabash River Sand Prairie Technical Loop

Rare Indiana sand prairie meets Wabash River bottoms

Moderate

This loop cuts through some of the last native sand prairie in Indiana, where deep sand gives way to clay bottoms as you work toward the Wabash River floodplain south of Vincennes. The route starts at the old Bruceville oil fields and winds through prairie remnants that botanists come to study – you’ll see compass plants and big bluestem that once covered thousands of acres before the plow arrived. Sand Hollow Creek at mile 12 can be tricky after rain, with clay approaches that’ll bog down anything without momentum and decent tires.

You’ll want high-clearance with good tires and preferably 4WD for the sand sections and creek crossings – the fine sand can catch stock vehicles off guard. Dry months from July through September offer the best conditions when the prairie wildflowers are blooming and the bottomland isn’t a muddy mess. No permits required but carry extra water because there’s no services once you leave Bruceville behind. The reward is experiencing what Indiana looked like before settlement, with prairie vistas that stretch to the Wabash and decent primitive camping along the river terraces.
