Lake Sumner Forest Park 4WD Circuit
Canterbury high country alpine forest circuit
Lake Sumner sits in Canterbury’s backcountry like a hidden gem, surrounded by dense beech forest and towering peaks. This circuit winds through Lake Sumner Forest Park on narrow forestry tracks, connecting historic Department of Conservation huts and crossing multiple streams that feed the Hurunui River system. The route passes through Jacks Pass (945m) and threads between Lake Taylor and Lake Sumner proper, with steep pinch points where the track clings to bluff edges above the water.
Moderate difficulty with some technical stream crossings and narrow shelf roads that’ll test your nerve. Stock 4WD with good ground clearance handles it fine, but pack recovery gear for the boggy sections after rain. Best tackled October through April when snow’s cleared the high passes. No permits needed, but bring your own water and camping gear – DOC huts are first-come-first-served. It’s proper South Island high country that shows you why Canterbury’s interior still feels wild.
