Waimakariri River Gorge Track

Canterbury's notorious high country gorge crossing

Expert

The Waimakariri River Gorge Track cuts through some of Canterbury’s most unforgiving high country, following old musterer routes that wind between towering limestone bluffs and across boulder-strewn river flats. This isn’t your weekend warrior trail — the track demands respect as it threads through narrow gorge sections where rock falls are common, and the infamous Klondyke Corner crossing has claimed more than a few undercarriages over the decades. The route connects Castle Hill Station to the backcountry, passing through Craigieburn Forest Park before dropping into the gorge proper.

This is Expert-level territory requiring a well-prepared 4WD with diff locks, recovery gear, and drivers who know how to read water. Multiple river crossings can turn lethal during spring snowmelt or heavy rain — check conditions with DOC before heading in. Best tackled during summer months (December-March) when water levels are manageable. Pack spare parts, recovery straps, and enough food for delays. Those who make it through get bragging rights and access to some of the South Island’s most remote high country camping spots.
