Cordillera de Mérida Paso del Águila High Circuit
Cloud forest to páramo in the Venezuelan Andes
Above Mucuchíes, the road deteriorates into a track that Venezuelan truckers abandoned decades ago when the Trasandina highway opened. This 85-kilometer loop climbs through cloud forest into genuine páramo — high-altitude grassland where frailejones grow like alien sculptures and morning frost coats your windshield year-round. The crux comes at Paso del Águila, where the track threads between boulders at 4,200 meters elevation, offering views across the Chama Valley to Pico Bolívar. GPS coordinates are essential since fog rolls in without warning.
Difficult route requiring serious mountain driving skills and altitude preparation — the thin air kills engine performance above 3,500 meters. Modified 4WD with low-range gearing essential, plus full recovery kit including winch and sand ladders for the boggy sections. Fuel availability sketchy outside Mérida, so carry 60 liters minimum. Best attempted dry season (December-April) when páramo streams are passable. No permits required but inform local authorities of your route. The reward: camping under stars so bright they’ll hurt your eyes, in landscape that feels more like the moon than South America.
