Los Llanos Circuit – Venezuelan Outback
Venezuela's endless plains and cowboy culture
Los Llanos stretches across Venezuela’s heartland like an endless green ocean, where cowboys still work cattle the old way and caimans sun themselves along muddy riverbanks. This circuit connects remote ranches and settlements via dirt tracks that flood during wet season and bake hard as concrete in the dry months. The route crosses multiple tributaries of the Orinoco system, including technical fords at Río Portuguesa and Río Apure where local knowledge separates confident crossings from expensive recoveries.
Moderate difficulty overall but seasonal extremes make timing everything—dry season (December-April) turns crossings manageable while wet season makes large sections impassable. High-clearance 4WD essential, with winch recommended for solo travelers. Stock up on fuel in Barinas or San Fernando de Apure; once you’re out there, it’s ranchers and river settlements for hundreds of miles. The experience is pure South American frontier: endless skies, incredible wildlife watching, and nights around ranch fires with llaneros who still live the cowboy life for real.
