Magdalena Stock Driveway
America's last great cattle trail across big sky country
The Magdalena Stock Driveway follows the ghost of America’s last great cattle trail, stretching 125 miles from Springerville, Arizona to the railroad town of Magdalena, New Mexico. This route crosses the vast Plains of San Agustin, where the Very Large Array radio telescopes scan deep space against a backdrop of endless grassland. The trail passes through the heart of ranching country that saw millions of cattle and sheep driven to rail shipping points well into the 1960s, making it one of the longest-used livestock routes in the American West.
Easy to moderate difficulty depending on weather – summer thunderstorms can turn clay sections into impassable gumbo. Stock high-clearance vehicle handles most conditions, though 4WD helps in wet weather. Best driven spring through fall, avoiding winter snow and mud season. No permits required, but respect private ranch land and cattle operations. This is wide-open country with excellent stargazing, dispersed camping opportunities, and a genuine taste of New Mexico’s ranching heritage before the interstate changed everything.
