El Malpais National Monument — Joe Skeen Campground

Joe Skeen is a small, no-frills NPS camp tucked along NM-117 on the southeast edge of El Malpais. Sixteen sites sit in open high-desert terrain with views straight into the lava field — no shade, no hookups, vault toilets only. It’s the closest established camp to the eastern terminus of the Zuni-Acoma Trail, which makes it the logical base for anyone running that crossing. Sites fill on spring and fall weekends but rarely during the week. Dispersed camping is prohibited inside the monument boundary, so this is your only legal overnight inside the park on this side.

Access from Grants is about 23 miles south on NM-117 — paved the whole way. High-clearance not required to reach camp, but you’ll want it if you’re staging for lava field travel. No drinking water on-site; tank up in Grants or Grants’s Big Rock casino area before you roll south. Cell signal is minimal. Stay limit is 14 days.
