BLM Apache Box Dispersed Area
Apache Box cuts a rugged gorge through black volcanic rock in the middle of New Mexico’s high desert. Sites are tucked into side canyons and benches above seasonal washes, with dramatic views of towering cliff faces. No amenities whatsoever — this is pure wilderness camping. The main wash can flash flood, so camp on high ground. Popular with rock hounds hunting for garnets and obsidian.
Access requires crossing several washes that can be impassable after storms. High-clearance 4WD recommended for the best sites deeper in the canyon. Avoid during monsoon season when flash floods are common.
