Gila National Forest McMillan Campground
McMillan Campground sits at 7,400 feet elevation in ponderosa pine and oak forest, offering 9 sites with fire rings, tables, and vault toilets. The real attraction is proximity to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument — 13th-century Mogollon ruins built into natural caves just a mile up the trail. Sites are well-spaced among mature pines, staying cool even in summer heat that bakes the desert below. Water comes from a hand pump well, and the campground rarely fills except during peak autumn color season.
Access via Highway 15 north from Silver City — a winding mountain road that takes patience but rewards with scenery. The final approach is gravel but suitable for any vehicle. Snow possible October through March at this elevation. Campground typically opens May 1st and closes with first significant snow, usually late October or November.
