Hannagan Meadow Campground — Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Hannagan Meadow sits at 9,100 feet in a spruce-fir forest clearing on US-191, one of the most remote stretches of highway in the lower 48. It’s a USFS developed campground with vault toilets and a handful of sites — nothing fancy, but the pines are thick, the meadow is open, and you’ll hear elk bugling in September. It’s a legitimate basecamp for Trans-America Trail runs between Clifton and Alpine, and it sits right next to the historic Hannagan Meadow Lodge for a hot meal or basic resupply. Gets busy July–August with Arizona summer escapees fleeing the valley heat.

Access is paved via US-191 (the old AZ-666), so any rig gets here. Sites are primitive — bring your own water or filter from the meadow creek. Fire restrictions hit hard mid-summer; check with Alpine Ranger District before you load the firewood. Snow can close the road as early as October and as late as May.
