Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests — Blue River Corridor Dispersed Camp

The Blue River runs through some of the roughest, least-visited country in Arizona, and the dispersed pull-offs along Forest Road 281 between the Blue River Trailhead and the small community of Blue are as real as it gets. Ponderosa pines and cottonwoods shade the banks, the river gurgles nearby, and you won’t hear a road noise from the highway because there isn’t one. This stretch sits inside the Apache-Sitgreaves and falls under standard 14-day dispersed rules — no fee, no reservation, no hand-holding.

FR 281 is a winding dirt road that can turn nasty with rain — high-clearance is the floor, and 4WD is smarter. River crossings are seasonal and depth-dependent; scout before committing. Cell service is effectively zero. Nearest fuel and resupply is Alpine (~30 miles north) or Clifton (~25 miles south. Check fire restrictions with the Alpine Ranger District before you spark anything.
