White Sands National Park Heart of Sands Loop
The Heart of Sands Loop takes you deep into White Sands’ surreal gypsum dunefield, where brilliant white sand stretches to the horizon under New Mexico’s big sky. This 4.5-mile scenic drive winds through towering dunes that constantly shift with the wind, creating an almost lunar landscape that’s mesmerized visitors since the 1930s. The contrast is striking — pure white sand against deep blue sky and distant purple mountains.
The paved road handles any vehicle, but sand frequently drifts across the pavement requiring slow speeds. Best light is early morning or late afternoon when the dunes glow pink and orange. Summer midday temperatures can make the sand scorching hot to walk on. The loop closes occasionally during missile testing at adjacent White Sands Missile Range.
