Pierce to Headquarters Creek Road

This route follows the footsteps of 1860s gold prospectors from Pierce—Idaho’s first gold rush town—deep into the Clearwater backcountry via old pack trails and logging spurs. The road winds through cathedral stands of western red cedar and Douglas fir, crossing Headquarters Creek on a sketchy log bridge at mile 14 that’s been “temporary” since the 1980s, with the remains of hydraulic mining operations scattered throughout the drainage.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD for muddy sections and rocky creek crossings, plus chainsaw skills for occasional blowdowns across the track. Best from July through September when the high country dries out, though expect mosquitoes in biblical proportions. Stock up in Kamiah—it’s your last chance for 50 miles. Excellent dispersed camping along multiple creek benches, and you’ll have the satisfaction of driving where prospectors once packed mules loaded with dreams and disappointment.
