Nez Perce Trail – Weippe to Kooskia Historic Route
Lewis and Clark's actual route through Nez Perce country
The ruts carved by Corps of Discovery horses in September 1805 still guide this 42-mile backcountry connection between Weippe Prairie and Kooskia through the heart of Clearwater National Forest. You’ll cross Lawyer Creek twice, navigate the steep Weippe Creek descent, and pass the same camas meadows where Nez Perce tribal members first encountered the starving expedition members. The route follows mostly Forest Service Road 100, with several technical creek crossings and a challenging rocky section near Mile 28 where you’ll need to pick your line carefully through boulder fields.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates for the creek crossings and rocky sections. Best tackled May through October when snow clears from the higher elevations around 4,200 feet. No permits required, but carry extra water since the creek crossings aren’t always reliable for drinking. Dispersed camping available throughout, with excellent sites near Lawyer Creek. You’ll experience genuine frontier history while earning panoramic views of the Clearwater drainage that haven’t changed much since 1805.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or does it need a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD is the stated minimum and will get most rigs through. Lifted builds have more margin on the rutted sections and any washed-out crossings, but this isn't a trail that demands lockers or a rock crawler.
When does the trail typically open in spring and is snow a real concern?
Best season is May through October. At elevations up to 4,200 ft in northern Idaho, lingering snow and deep mud can make the route impassable into late May some years — call the Clearwater National Forest ranger district before a spring run.
Do I need a permit to drive or camp on this route?
No permit is required to drive the route. Dispersed camping is allowed under Clearwater National Forest rules — standard 14-day stay limit applies, stay 200 ft from water sources, and pack out everything.
What's the hardest section of the trail and what makes it technical?
The route is rated moderate overall, with difficulty coming from rutted forest roads, soft soil after rain, and the water crossings rather than any single gnarly obstacle. Wet conditions are the biggest variable — what's a smooth dirt road in July can turn into a clay mess after a thunderstorm.
There's zero cell service on this route — how far is the nearest fuel and resupply from the trailhead?
Kooskia is the nearest town with gas and basic supplies, sitting at the southern end of the route. Top off your tank there before heading north toward Weippe — 42 miles of remote forest road with no services in between means you're on your own if you run dry.
