Maine’s Baxter State Park Scientific Forest Management Unit Roads
Working forest roads through active timber operations
These aren’t your typical park roads — the Scientific Forest Management Unit’s working roads thread through 29,000 acres of active timber management where Percival Baxter’s vision of sustainable forestry plays out in real time. The main arteries are decent gravel, but side spurs to recent cuts turn nasty fast with deep ruts from logging trucks and corduroy sections over wet ground. Gate access at Togue Pond requires advance permission from park headquarters, and you’ll share these roads with massive log haulers that own the right-of-way.
Plan on moderate to difficult conditions depending on recent logging activity and weather. High-clearance 4WD minimum, with recovery gear recommended for the sketchier timber access roads. Limited to scientific researchers, forest management professionals, and permitted recreational users during specific windows — call ahead months in advance. Best access June through September when the ground firms up. Fuel up in Millinocket; once you’re in the unit, it’s 40+ miles to the nearest services, and cell coverage is nonexistent.
