Chimney Pond Road

Katahdin's granite gauntlet through Baxter's heart

Difficult

Chimney Pond Road cuts through the heart of Baxter State Park, climbing relentlessly from Roaring Brook Campground through dense spruce-fir forest before opening into the glacial cirque below Katahdin’s knife-edge ridges. This 3.3-mile stretch follows an old tote road built in the 1930s, with granite ledges, root-braided climbs, and stream crossings that’ll test your line choice and throttle control. The road dead-ends at Chimney Pond Campground, where the granite walls of the cirque rise nearly vertical for 1,500 feet.

This is technical driving that demands stock 4WD with low range and solid skid protection — the granite shelves will find every vulnerable component underneath. Summer and early fall offer the best conditions, but expect mud holes and loose rock regardless. No permits needed beyond park entry, but camping reservations fill months ahead. Water’s available at both ends, and dispersed camping isn’t allowed in Baxter. What you get is Maine’s most dramatic alpine access and bragging rights for conquering the state’s gnarliest legal trail.
