Skeleton Coast Route

Africa's most notorious coastline

Difficult

The Skeleton Coast Route follows Namibia’s desolate Atlantic shoreline for 500 kilometers from Swakopmund to the Angolan border, passing dozens of shipwrecks that give this coastline its ominous name. The route alternates between hard-packed beach driving and deep desert sand tracks, with the ghost town of Kolmanskop and the massive seal colony at Cape Cross as major waypoints. Dense fog rolls in without warning, reducing visibility to zero and forcing navigation by GPS alone through a landscape that looks identical for hundreds of kilometers.

This is serious desert expedition territory requiring permits for the National West Coast Recreation Area and advance booking for fuel at Terrace Bay and Torra Bay. The sand gets brutally soft inland, while the beach route requires careful tide timing and salt spray protection for your vehicle. Dry season (May-October) offers the most reliable conditions, but expect heavy fog any time of year. What draws overlanders here is the absolute remoteness — you’ll drive for hours without seeing another soul, surrounded by bleached whale bones and rusted ship hulls in one of Earth’s most unforgiving environments.
