Dorob Coast Shipwreck Trail
Shipwreck graveyard through diamond coast desert
Running parallel to the Atlantic between Swakopmund and Terrace Bay, this coastal track passes more than a dozen major shipwrecks including the Eduard Bohlen, a cargo steamer now stranded 500 meters inland after decades of shifting dunes. The route threads between the Namib Desert’s eastern sand sea and the surf-pounded Atlantic, crossing salt flats where diamond miners once scraped fortunes from the gravel. Bleached whale bones and rusted ship hulls emerge from morning fog like ghost monuments to the coast’s reputation as the world’s largest ship graveyard.
Easy to moderate difficulty on hard-packed salt and gravel, though deep sand patches and tidal zones demand constant attention and 4WD capability. Permits required for Dorob National Park and strict route adherence—this is active diamond mining territory with serious consequences for straying. Best driven April through October when coastal fog is lighter and temperatures bearable. Carry extra fuel for 400+ kilometers, emergency food, and GPS backup since landmarks disappear in fog. No cell service for most of the route. What you get is raw coastal desert like nowhere else on earth, where the Namib meets the Atlantic in spectacular desolation.
