Transfagarasan Highway — Curtea de Arges to Sibiu via the Southern Carpathian High Crossing (Full Traverse)

The road Ceaușescu built. The Carpathians own it.

Moderate

The Transfăgărășan (DN7C) climbs from Curtea de Argeș in Wallachia across the Southern Carpathians to Sibiu in Transylvania — 90 kilometres of road that Ceaușescu ordered built in just 14 months after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, to give Romanian military forces a fast north-south crossing. Roughly 40 soldiers died during construction. The road tops out at Bâlea Lac at 2,042 metres elevation, where a glacial lake sits beneath sheer rock walls and a tunnel punches through the actual ridge. Below the tunnel on the north side, the switchbacks tighten into one of the most cinematic descents on the planet — 20 hairpins stacked above a waterfall. Transfăgărășan is fully paved but demands respect: guardrails are minimal, stone walls appear without warning, and tour buses occupy the centerline with zero apology.

This is not a technical off-road trail — a 2WD car can drive it in dry summer conditions. But for overlanders it sits on the bucket list because of the Bâlea Lac area 4WD tracks, the surrounding Făgăraș Mountains wilderness, and the sheer spectacle of the thing. The road is officially open only from late June to late October — snow closes it firmly from both ends in winter and the tunnel alone doesn’t keep it passable. No permit is required. Camping is available at Bâlea Lac and scattered pull-offs. Romania’s Carpathians get crowded July through August — arrive early mornings or target shoulder-season September runs for the best experience and the autumn colors.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock 2WD car handle the Transfăgărășan, or do I actually need 4WD?

The main paved highway is doable in any stock 2WD vehicle during summer — it's a public road, not a trail. If you're pulling onto the gravel side tracks or pushing into the meadows to camp, high clearance and 4WD become useful fast.

When does the Transfăgărășan actually open and close each year?

CNAIR typically opens the high section between Bâlea Lac and Cartisoara from late June to late October, snow dependent — but it's been as late as July some years. The tunnel at Bâlea stays open year-round for foot traffic, but driving the full pass outside that window is a hard no.

Are there any permits, tolls, or fees to drive the Transfăgărășan?

No trail permits required. Romania uses a vignette system (rovinieta) for all public roads — you need one purchased before driving on any Romanian national road or you risk a heavy fine. Buy it online at roviniete.ro before you cross the border.

What's the hardest section of the route and what should I actually be ready for?

The switchbacks climbing to Bâlea Lac near the 2,042m summit are the crux — tight turns, sheer drop-offs, no guardrails in spots, and heavy tourist traffic in July and August that turns it into a slow crawl. The road surface is generally sound but sections can be wet, slick, and fog-socked with zero visibility even in midsummer.

Is there reliable water and where can I actually camp along the route?

Dispersed camping is possible in the lower forest zones and high alpine meadows — Bâlea Lake area has organized camping but gets crowded. Water from mountain streams is generally clean but treat it anyway; there are no reliable resupply points for food or water between Curtea de Argeș and Sibiu, so leave with full tanks and provisions.
