Big Bend Ranch State Park Backcountry Roads
Desert backcountry on old ranch roads
The old ranch roads threading through Big Bend Ranch State Park cut across some of the most remote desert country in Texas. These primitive two-tracks follow historic ranching routes through the Chihuahuan Desert, crossing volcanic ridges and limestone canyons that haven’t seen regular traffic since cattle operations shut down decades ago. The Rancherias Loop connects several backcountry camping areas, while the more technical Cinco Tinajas Trail drops into deep arroyos where ancient water holes sustained travelers for centuries.
This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for the technical sections, though some ranch roads are accessible to stock vehicles. Sharp volcanic rock will test your sidewalls, and summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F, making fall through spring the smart seasons. Water is scarce—pack extra. The payoff is genuine solitude in one of Texas’s most spectacular desert landscapes, with dispersed camping opportunities throughout the backcountry areas.
