Big Bend Ranch State Park — Colorado Canyon Dispersed Camp
The River Road (FM 170 and the interior ranch track) through Big Bend Ranch State Park is one of the most dramatic stretches of overland real estate in Texas. Designated primitive campsites dot the route — flat cleared areas in the Chihuahuan Desert scrub with zero amenities and zero crowds compared to the national park across the river. Views into Colorado Canyon are savage. No RV-friendly pull-throughs here — this is tent and rooftop-tent territory for compact rigs. Fire restrictions apply seasonally; check current conditions at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center in Lajitas before you commit.
Access via the unpaved interior roads requires a Big Bend Ranch State Park day-use or overnight permit. Permit kiosks are at each trailhead entrance. Road surface ranges from gravel to rough dirt — high-clearance is a must after any rain. Cell service: effectively zero inside the park. Nearest fuel and water is Lajitas, roughly 20 miles east of the western park boundary.
