Big Bend Ranch State Park — Sauceda Interior Dispersed Camp

Sauceda sits near the geographic center of Big Bend Ranch State Park — a historic ranch headquarters converted into a ranger station and primitive staging area for overlanders running the park’s interior track network. Designated dispersed sites around the station give you a legitimate basecamp for multi-day exploration of the Bofecillos Mountains and the surrounding desert plateau. Elevation here is noticeably cooler than the river road below. No hookups, no showers, no trash pickup — but the rangers at Sauceda can tell you current road conditions and fire status, which is worth the drive alone.

Getting to Sauceda means committing to roughly 25 miles of unpaved interior park road from either the eastern or western entrance. High-clearance 4WD is strongly recommended; soft-roaders get stranded here every season. Water is not reliably available at Sauceda — carry what you need from Lajitas or Presidio. Entry permit required. Best seasons are fall through early spring; summer heat here is genuinely dangerous.
