Presidio — El Camino Real de los Tejas Fuel and Border Town Resupply

Point of Interest

Presidio sits at the US–Mexico border crossing on the Rio Grande, surrounded by high desert and the Chinati Mountains to the north. For anyone running FM 170 or the Big Bend Ranch interior, Presidio is the critical western resupply node. You’ll find fuel stations (including a Love’s on US 67), a Stripes convenience store, a Family Dollar, and a handful of local restaurants. Water is available in town — load up, because nothing exists on the state park roads for the next 50-plus miles east toward Lajitas.

Presidio runs hot — summer temps routinely exceed 110°F and it holds the record for highest average annual temperature of any US city. The cooler months of October through March are when overlanders should be moving through. Cell service is reasonable in town (AT&T and Verizon) but drops fast once you hit FM 170 east. It’s a small border town — keep situational awareness and be respectful.

Last fuel west before Big Bend Ranch backcountry.
