Big Bend Ranch State Park — Oso Loop Road Dispersed Camp

The Oso Loop cuts through the heart of Big Bend Ranch State Park’s lowland desert, threading between volcanic intrusions and creosote flats that feel more Chihuahuan than anywhere else in Texas. Dispersed camping here is pull-off-and-pitch — flat enough for a rooftop tent, zero infrastructure, zero neighbors if you time it right. The landscape is wide open and brutally honest: there’s no shade, no water, and no margin for being underprepared. Nights are cold and dark, and the Milky Way overhead makes it worth every bump on the way in.

Oso Loop Road is accessible via the park’s interior road network off Sauceda or from FM 170 approaches. High-clearance 4WD is required — the road surface degrades significantly after rain and some rocky sections will test your breakover angle. Permit required through TPWD; pick one up at Barton Warnock or Warnock Visitor Center before entry. Carry all water. Summer is off-limits for all but the most heat-hardened.
