Big Bend Ranch State Park — Cinco Tinajas Campsite

Cinco Tinajas is a named, designated campsite inside Big Bend Ranch State Park — part of the park’s managed backcountry system accessed via rough interior roads. The tinajas (natural rock basins that collect rainwater) nearby are the kind of feature that makes the Trans-Pecos feel like another planet. The camp itself is open desert — no shade worth mentioning, no amenities beyond what you bring, and zero ambient light at night. Permits are required and assigned through Texas State Parks; sites don’t fill as fast as Big Bend National Park but don’t assume you can walk in without one.

The road in is rough doubletrack that will test a stock high-clearance rig. Soft sand and loose rock are both in play depending on recent weather. Nearest water resupply is back at Sauceda or Lajitas — plan accordingly. October through March is the window when this country is livable; summer temps routinely exceed 110°F in the canyon bottoms.
