French Creek State Park Iron Furnace Heritage Circuit
Revolutionary War iron roads through state forest
The remains of Hopewell Furnace’s charcoal roads wind through French Creek State Park’s 7,500 acres, where Revolutionary War cannons were forged from bog iron. These forgotten logging tracks connect the historic furnace site to remote camping areas via rocky climbs through dense Pennsylvania hardwood forest. The main challenge comes at Furnace Creek Ford, where spring runoff creates a technical water crossing that’s claimed more than a few oil pans.
This moderate route demands high-clearance 4WD for the rocky sections and creek crossings, plus recovery gear for the inevitable Pennsylvania mud. Best tackled April through October when water levels are manageable and the State Park’s 10 primitive camping areas are accessible. You’ll earn solitude among 200-year-old iron works ruins and some of the best fall colors in southeastern Pennsylvania.
