Provincial Road 391 — The Pas to Flin Flon via Cranberry Portage Boreal Corridor

The north's main artery — boreal, bleak, and brilliant.

Moderate

PR 391 is the lifeline of northern Manitoba, running from The Pas northeast through Cranberry Portage and on to Flin Flon — a hard, honest stretch of provincial road that crosses the transition from Manitoba Lowlands clay belt into exposed Precambrian Shield country. The terrain shifts dramatically past Cranberry Portage, where the road tightens, grades of crushed gravel turn rougher, and the surrounding boreal closes in. Moose are a genuine hazard at dawn and dusk — this isn’t a figure of speech. Side spurs off 391 toward Wekusko Lake and Clearwater Lake Provincial Park reward those who leave the main road and poke around.

In dry summer conditions a stock 2WD can cover PR 391, but the side roads and exploration spurs demand at minimum a high-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires. Spring breakup (April–May) makes certain sections genuinely dangerous — frost heaves and soft shoulders can swallow a wheel without warning. Fuel is available in The Pas, Cranberry Portage, and Flin Flon; stretches between are long. No cell service north of Cranberry Portage on most carriers. This is a multi-day overland route best run in July or August with camp gear loaded and a recovery kit stowed.
