Zion Narrows Road to Chamberlain’s Ranch — North Fork Virgin River Upper Canyon Drive

Most people hike up the Zion Narrows from the bottom. A much smaller crowd knows you can drive the top-down approach via North Fork Road off Highway 9, crossing the Kolob Plateau to reach Chamberlain’s Ranch — the permitted put-in for top-down Narrows hikes. The road runs roughly 18 miles of maintained dirt and gravel off the east side of Zion National Park, crossing open sage flats and ponderosa benches before dropping toward the North Fork of the Virgin River. The road itself is accessible to most high-clearance vehicles in dry conditions, but the real payoff is standing at the canyon rim where the Virgin River begins its slot canyon descent. You’re looking at one of the most dramatic canyon entries in the American Southwest.

This is a genuinely accessible overland approach by Utah standards — moderate difficulty in dry weather, but the road turns greasy and impassable in wet conditions, which can hit any month. A standard 4WD with decent clearance handles it fine when dry. No services exist beyond Highway 9 — fuel at Springdale or Kanab before heading out. Permits are required for top-down Narrows hikes but not to drive the road itself. Dispersed camping is not permitted on National Park land here; stay on BLM or Kaibab National Forest parcels nearby. Best season is May through October, avoiding the Narrows flash flood window.
