Hurricane Cliffs to Toroweap Overlook — Uinkaret Plateau Rim Road

3,000 feet straight down. No guardrails.

Moderate

Toroweap sits on the Grand Canyon’s north rim inside Grand Canyon National Park, but getting there has nothing to do with the crowded South Rim experience. From the junction at Fredonia or St. George, you’re looking at roughly 60 miles of dirt road across the Uinkaret Plateau — a volcanic landscape of cinder cones, lava flows, and wide-open nothing — before arriving at a fenced overlook where the canyon wall drops a sheer 3,000 feet to Lava Falls rapid below. No guardrails, no crowds, no gift shop. Just the edge of the earth and the sound of one of the most fearsome rapids on the Colorado.

The road is maintained BLM/NPS dirt — high clearance required, 4WD strongly recommended when wet. The surface can be deeply rutted or washboarded depending on recent maintenance. There are exactly nine primitive campsites at Toroweap; first-come in shoulder season, permit required May through September through recreation.gov. The ranger station is staffed intermittently. Carry a minimum of five gallons of water per person — there is absolutely nothing out here. Nearest fuel is Fredonia, AZ or Colorado City, AZ. No cell service for the entire approach. Go when it hasn’t rained in at least two days.
